Urban Life Skills Updates!

by Matt DeMateo 23. March 2011 09:40

Things are going well for Urban Life Skills!  As the warm weather starts up, we begin our busy season!  Thanks for your continued support and prayers.  We couldn't do this work without you!  Here are some things that God has been doing among us.

  • Friday Night Group - We have changed our Friday night group layout and the youth are more engaged and the discussions are going deeper!
  • New Curriculum - We are in the process of compiling and putting into print our new curriculum.  As we teach it, we are laying out lesson plans so we can have others teach each lesson!
  • CPS - Culture of Calm grant is going strong as we continue to mentor 40 youth in Farragut high school!
  • Chicago Adventure Therapy - We have just planned out a variety of events for the spring/summer including a camping trip, rock climbing, biking, kayaking, and more!
  • Substance Abuse Training - Art and Epi are currently in California being trained on a new substance abuse curriculum (http://www.matrixinstitute.org/training/training.html) - going to take our group to the next level!
  • New Reentry Grant and New Staff! Today we began a new program through the governor's office working with juvenile offenders on parole.  We have hired Amy Williams as the program coordinator, Jay Estrada as our full time outreach worker, and Wes Kennedy as our Part Time outreach worker.
  • New Theater System - This weekend we are installing a state of the art theater system in the youth room with a 9 foot screen, HD projector, and surround sound.  We will use this for Friday groups, movie nights, and more!
  • Friday Night Football League - We will be beginning a Friday night flag football league in April.  There will be 8 teams and the league will be from 10 PM to 2 AM at the YMCA at 26th and Western.
  • Arcadia 2011 - On April 16th we will be having our 3rd Arcadia videogame tournament.  This will kickoff the spring season.  We will have 200+ youth out for a day of games, pizza, and outreach!
  • Gym Project - In two weeks we are going to be launching our fund-raising efforts for our new multi-purpose gym space.  The goal is to have a fully functional gym by September 1!  This will include basketball hoops, volleyball net, and more...possibly even a climbing wall!

There's a lot going on!  Thanks for your hard work and continued support.  Remember that God is moving and we must continue to pray for our youth and their families.  There were 4 shootings in the neighborhood last week alone...keep on going and keep on praying.

Men's Encounter Retreat, March 25-26, 2011

by Events 28. February 2011 11:30

Many men struggle with issues in their past that stifle their personality, keep them defeated and rob their influence.  At this Encounter Retreat, we will deal with how to break free from the grip of the past and regain the influence you have been called to have as a man of God.

The Purpose of the Encounter Retreat:

  1. To identify & destroy the destructive landing strips that have been created in your life since childhood.
  2. To help restore the true personality that God has given you.
  3. To initiate healing in broken relationships.
  4. To help you be free to accomplish the purposes God has placed within you.

New Life Centers expands with New Life Works!

by Elizabeth Galik 1. July 2010 07:56

New Life Centers of Chicagoland, NFP, was founded in 2005 by New Life Community Church. New Life Centers exists to share Christ’s love by guiding youth, singles, and families to abundant life through health, education, and employment.

We are currently seeking to employ Site Directors/Trainers for our New Life Works project. The goal of New Life Works is to connectChicago’s unemployed populations with sustainable employment and to equipChicago’s hard-to-employ populations for effective employment.

We are excited about this new endeavor and are looking for quality, self-motivated individuals to join our team. A good candidate for this position will have experience in group work, training, case management, grant writing, report writing, public speaking, and supervising people. Travel within the Chicagoland area will be required, so access to reliable transportation is necessary. If interested, please send yourresume to info@nlcenters.org.

Teenagers in the house!

by Mike Berry 30. April 2010 09:31
We now have two teenagers in our family! Our 13 yr old daughter joins our 14 yr old daughter as our 2nd teen. Some people roll their eyes and make discouraging comments about the teen years but we know that God can work in young people! Both my wife and I came to Christ as teens and I’m glad to be working with our youth at New Life Midway. It’s time for our all-church Youth Retreat on May 14-16th. The theme is “Live on Purpose”. This should be a great time! Pastor Joshua and the team from Melrose/MontClare are leading the teaching while Pastor Matt from Little Village is leading the games. 7th graders thru High School—sign up on line under the “Current Events” section of this website. Adults can apply to be a Chaperone. Don’t miss it!!!
