When in Rome

Let us tell you about our time in Rome and if you read to the end the slideshow of pictures will be that much more meaningful!…

After 5 weeks of classroom learning, studio time, and local ministry, the staff and student artists of the OM Arts School of Mission set out to take what had been learned and apply it in outreach in an entirely new place. Our destination was Latina, a region just outside of Rome, and our caravan of 3 silver vans loaded with 26 passengers left our sleepy valley with great expectation.

We arrived safe and sound after enjoying a beautiful drive, which included a glimpse of the Leaning Tower of Pisa as we passed on by and a sunset over the coast of Italy. We were greeted by our host, Dario, who had dinner waiting for us and then we all settled into our hotel rooms for the night.

Our first day was spent in small groups who were commissioned to visit specific places in Rome where they would observe, pray, and listen for anything God would communicate to them about that place and His message for the people there. Each of the 3 groups returned with different insights but many overlapped and we began to see a theme emerge.

The second day was a free day. The program has included very few full free days and everyone enjoyed having time to further explore Rome or rest however they chose. While the trip was no vacation, Jon and I did have a great time on our own that day seeing sights in Rome together for the first time. A highlight was enjoying dinner on the terrace of a little restaurant with the Colosseum in view.

The third day was dedicated to debriefing and preparation for the outreach. We spent more time discussing what each person was hearing from God about the message that should be communicated to the community. From there we made a game plan and dispersed into task groups. One group set up the space at the church where we would collaborate with the local church to create and prepare for the outreach. A second group focused on creating the image that would communicate the message we had to share in the form of a mosaic of paintings to be displayed at each site during the outreach. The last group scoped out the places in the community where the outreach could happen, decided which places to target, and made sure the logistics were in place so we could pull it all off.

Our fourth day there was the day of the outreach. The morning and afternoon were a flurry of finishing last minute details, one last dance rehearsal, a time of corporate prayer to make the way before us, and then we were off! First our team of artists along with local church members walked together to a park near the church and then scattered to find their places for the outreach to begin!

So how do you go into a public space and gain the attention of everyone there so that you can share an important message? A flash mob of course! Our dancers had choreographed a dance they taught to our group and then taught to the church members in Latina. Now it was show time.

Our group was dispersed trying to act as natural as possible when suddenly (though intentionally) music started blaring from one of our vans and the first group of dancers, already in place, began moving to the beat! As planned, each of our groups nonchalantly made their way over from their posts at bus stops, cafes and sidewalks, to the performance space where one by one they joined in. Before long there were 25-30 people moving together in step to the music. As the song faded, each dancer revealed small square paintings which they placed strategically on the ground where they had danced. As they stepped away a coherent image emerged illustrating the value of connectedness.

Now that all eyes were on us the group performed the dance altogether one more time for everyone to enjoy. After the second performance, Dario called to the local onlookers to come and look at the painting closely. He asked what they saw in the image. Most recognized that the image portrayed people forming a human chain and named themes related to that such as unity and community. He explained that the community of Latina is very diverse, which has been a cause for division, but it has potential to be a source of great strength. Chains can carry a negative connotation as something that binds, but it can also be a very positive thing as it serves to link things together and makes them stronger then they are apart. Dario then shared how the most important connection we can have is with Jesus, as Savior. Usually when someone mentions the name of Jesus in Italy in a public setting, the people scatter. Not here. They listened. The gospel was presented and everyone was given the opportunity to know Christ and the loving community of His church. Many local people stayed afterward and chatted with our artists through interpreters or with the local church members. By the end of the night our group had performed in four different locations in Latina and the message of hope in Christ was proclaimed at each! Connections were made and hearts were stirred with the truth!

We ended the night by sharing a meal with the church, spending time in praise and worship through music and dance, and taking communion together. Finally, the pastor of the church commissioned us as we left by praying over our group in one of the most powerful ways many of us have heard a man pray. He proclaimed victory over the Enemy in our lives and ministry and asked for great blessing on us. It was the perfect send-off and we all went to bed very tired but very blessed.

Lastly, day five was 12 hours of travel which included a lot of driving for Jon and the other two drivers, time at lots of rest stops to care for 26 bladders which couldn’t seem to get in sync :) , and activities in the car such as writing songs to avoid boredom! The artists in our van wrote the song, “Born in a Van”, which includes the following lyrics about our future children!

“they were so bored, they were naming each other’s future children, they were so bored they were naming Jon Tello’s future children; Donna Tello, Neu Tello, Yellow Tello, Black Tello, Mellow Tello, Fru Tello, Marshmallow Tello, Rafaelo Tello, Caramello Tello, Angelo Tello and Master Splinter Tello”!

What do you think? Any keepers? Who needs a book of baby names (when/if the day comes)?

When we finally arrived back in our small town we had dinner at a pizzeria. Then it was home sweet home where most weary travelers likely fell into bed upon arrival getting some much needed rest for the start of a whole new week of sessions the next day!

Below is a slideshow of pictures chronicling what I just described. They are in order but you may need to stop it and scroll through until you find the same image that is at the top of the post and start watching the slideshow from there (hover over the picture screen until you see the stop button, stop it, use the arrow keys to find the first image which is the same as the one on the top of the page, and select play). You’ll know you’re starting in the right place if the 3rd image you see is of 3 silver vans!

We are working on a video of the flash mob performances and will post it soon! Enjoy the pictures in the meantime!

Not Another Church, Please!

by Dwayne Eslick 9. March 2012 21:29

The official grand opening of New Life Community Church in Rogers Park just days away.  Countless hours and thousands of prayers have been poured into the launch of our 15th location.  We have invested financially by inviting the community.  We have also invested in more practical ways through purchasing the sound equipment, chairs, children's ministry materials, signage, projectors, and much more- everything is almost ready!

I was talking to someone a couple of days ago who is planning and praying towards the launch of a church in another Chicago neighborhood.  The community where he is planning on planting a church is weary from the number of churches that already exist.  They have basically told him, "not another church, PLEASE!"

The conversation helped me remember why we are planting another location of New Life in Chicago with the goal of planting a total of 40 new locations by 2020.  Here are the top 7 reasons that quickly come to mind:

1)  The population has grown incredibly over the last 100 years, but there are less churches in the city.  The reality is that there are over 45,000 households within a 1.5 mile radius of where we are starting New Life Rogers Park.  Within a 5 minute drive there are over 300,000 people. The amount of churches people have to choose from are very few.  And if even a tenth of the people decided to go to church that shares the good news of Jesus every Sunday, there would be no where for them to sit.

2) Some estimate that only 5% of the area goes to church on any given Sunday.   There are several churches doing a great job of reaching out, but we need more people reaching out in this NE corner of the city.

3) Different churches reach different kinds of people.  Our desire and vision is to be a multicultural church.  Music styles and communication methods differ based on our cultural background.  Our desire is to reach out to youth and seniors, the rich and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, those who are dark skinned and those who are light skinned, those who were born in other countries and those who were born here.  We know we won't be able to reach everybody, but we do we believe there are people we can impact that others might not be reaching.

4) We need to make more room because God is answering our prayers!  We fast and pray for our family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors to come closer to God.  We have seen hundreds of lives changed.  If we believe God is going to answer our prayers we need make more room for those who are going to come.  Instead of spending millions and millions on building a huge arena, we prefer to reach out to communities across the city and multiply our existing locations.

5) We have a unique philosophy of ministry that allows us to make an equally unique impact.   When I was a youth pastor on the southside, our youth were greatly touched by the generosity of a northsider who helped us build a gym for children and youth.  We are not 15 separate churches independently trying to survive.  We are one church in 15 locations that cooperates with God and each other in seeking to make a difference citywide.  As we are starting New Life Community Church in Rogers Park, we know that we are not on our own and are thankful that 14 other locations and thousands of people are praying for the Rogers Park area!

6) God has led us to start a new location in the Rogers Park area.  He first put it on our hearts to pray for this area over the last two years.  Without any marketing or any strategic effort other than prayer, we have had over 50 people from this area start coming to one of New Life's locations.  Through a clear open door from God, we have been able to rent from the YMCA.  Through many different reasons, we are confident God has led us to this neighborhood and we are simply just following His lead.

7) We love the Rogers Park community and surrounding areas!  We live here.  We love the diversity.  We love the urban feel.  We love the lakefront and we love the restaurants.  We can choose to live anywhere, but this is our home community.  We have people coming that live in Evanston, Skokie, and other surrounding neighborhoods that are less than a 5-10 minute drive away.  We look forward, not to sucking up the community’s resources, but giving back to the community and serving here.  Some of the people who drive from other neighborhoods come because this is where they grew up.  Others who come are here because they love the nations represented in the neighborhood and want to serve this community.  We look forward to discovering how we will be able to best serve the area and be a light here for God!

Our dream is to be a group of people who live out their faith and make a practical impact on this area of the city for God.  We don't want to be served, we want to serve.  We are just getting started and can't do everything at once, but our hope is that we would be able to make a positive difference in the name of Jesus Christ.

Our prayer to God is that we would not be just another church, Please God!

Hearing God in the Reaction

Hearing God in the Reaction

by James Boyd

So, I'm standing waiting for an elevator at the end of a pretty good Friday, looking forward to an evening spent watching my wife tear it up at a dodge ball fundraiser for our kids' school. While I'm in this contemplative state of bliss, a guy walks up to me and the following exchange occurs:

Strange, long curly haired man: We know what you said.

Me (somewhat dazed and confused): I'm sorry, what?

SLCHM: We know what you said, on the stairwell, at lunch (makes facial expression that indicates that there is no possible way I could misunderstand his meaning)

Me: I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about.

SLCHM (slightly frustrated at having to elaborate): We know what you said about our friend. We saw you. We know Sign Language. (Note: I work as a Sign Language Interpreter)

Me (confused look more prominent): I didn't say anything about your friend.

SLCHM (starting to walk away): We know what you said. We know.

Day. Ruined.

Anger. Rising.

I couldn't shake the feeling of animosity spreading from my gut to the rest of my body. Who was this guy, and how dare he make a blatantly false accusation against someone he doesn't know? As I board the train to meet up with my family, his comments are just gnawing at me . . . and I want to stay angry. I feel justified in all of the cruel things that are forming in my mind directed at this individual. The contempt I feel is palpable. And fortunately, I sensed God's Spirit saying, “Why are you so ticked?”

Our family had taken up the challenge from New Life to spend time fasting in order to hear the voice of God. One of the peculiar blessings of a fast is that it brings to the surface the crud that's been lurking inside our hearts and minds unknown. What God revealed to me that day is that, even though I treat people with kindness and respect as a whole, I have a real problem with treating people with respect who wrong me or treat others unjustly. My reactions in my heart, emotions, and thoughts are sinful in those circumstances. To say I am a follower of Jesus means I must treat everyone, even the arrogant and insensitive of the world, with respect and love.

So, the next time your day is ruined by another member of the human race, and you're tempted to give into feelings of anger, entitlement, arrogance, contempt, etc. - before you unleash a tirade that would earn you a long-winded lecture with soap in your mouth - Stop. Listen. God is trying to talk to you. He’s showing you your crud so you can confess and get rid of it. Why? So you can hear Him even more clearly. So you can see where He is at work all around you. So we can be slices of Heaven, not Hell. Our world could use some more Heaven; a lot more. Can you hear Him now?

James Boyd lives with his beautiful wife, Bekah and their 5, that's right, 5 children in Albany Park. He enjoys reading, playing with his kids, and college football (Roll Tide!).

Hearing God in 2012

Hearing God in 2012

Welcome to 2012! This past Sunday we began our church  21 day fast at all New Life locations. At New Life Lakeview we kicked it off by challenging you to begin the hours of 7am, 12pm and 7pm each day with prayer. To help you with this, we created a prayer guide. Some of you have wondered, "hey, can I get that in pdf for my iWhatever?" And we'd like to say, "why yes, yes you can." You can download it HERE.

We also invited you to start the year with a plan for reading the Bible. Hearing from God means we must learn to hear Him as He has spoken in Scripture. To help you we put out a bunch of Bible reading plans. Those are also available online in pdf format:
And if you didn't hear Sunday's "Hearing God" message and want to catch up, you can find audio from Sundays here:

God, we pray that you would clear away the distractions and give us attentive hearts to Your voice.

Amen.

Bird, Flying

by Elizabeth Galik 12. April 2011 09:04

One of the best parts of my work at the Centers is receiving the "bad" kids--I mean, kids who have made poor choices--and are sent on timeout from after-school programs at Humboldt Park.  I love those kids.  Last week, just a few moments into our afternoon, I was visited by a roomful of three middle schoolers, all refusing to write their Parts of Speech poems.  Asked to write a poem about their block that began with an adjective, all three middle schoolers responded with the enthusiasm of a speed bump.  Pencils never touched paper.

"Ok, it's your choice," I said, taking out the Discipline Policy papers.  "Write the poem and get a timeout for disrespect, or take a week off for refusing to follow directions."  This choice pushed seventh-grade Adonis* over the edge.  He was on his feet instantly.

"All these women here telling me what to do!" he shouted, eyes filling with tears.  "Ya'll can't just leave me alone!  I'm just trying to come in here and stay safe because my block is bloody and there's people being killed all over the place and I'm not writing about that!"

Other kids sent out.  Office door closed.  Adonis understood.  Peace restored.

Adonis wrote a new poem on the stipulation that it still not be read out loud.  His poem read, "Bird, flying."

"Is 'flying' an adjective or a verb?"

Oh, dear ones, we at Centers also do not want to write about Block, Bloody.  We want to write about Kids, Flying.  Families, Restored.  Communities, Beautiful.  The amazing fact that Adonis stands  in my office instead on the streets proves that they can do it; even now, in small ways, they are flying.

Join us.  We pray for no less than miracles, transformations, and restorations only God can bring about.  In the practical side of that, we also offer the opportunity to join us--to give.  On April 17th, New Life Community Church is collecting an offering for New Life Centers, and all funds collected that day will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 total.  On April 17th, join us in believing the blood can stop and our kids can fly.  Give online April 17th at nlcenters.org.

God's greatest blessings to you and yours.

*Name and photo changed to protect the one who didn't want his poem read aloud.

Urban Life Skills Updates!

by Matt DeMateo 23. March 2011 09:40

  • CPS - Culture of Calm grant is going strong as we continue to mentor 40 youth in Farragut high school!
  • Chicago Adventure Therapy - We have just planned out a variety of events for the spring/summer including a camping trip, rock climbing, biking, kayaking, and more!
  • Substance Abuse Training - Art and Epi are currently in California being trained on a new substance abuse curriculum (http://www.matrixinstitute.org/training/training.html) - going to take our group to the next level!
  • New Reentry Grant and New Staff! Today we began a new program through the governor's office working with juvenile offenders on parole.  We have hired Amy Williams as the program coordinator, Jay Estrada as our full time outreach worker, and Wes Kennedy as our Part Time outreach worker.
  • New Theater System - This weekend we are installing a state of the art theater system in the youth room with a 9 foot screen, HD projector, and surround sound.  We will use this for Friday groups, movie nights, and more!
  • Friday Night Football League - We will be beginning a Friday night flag football league in April.  There will be 8 teams and the league will be from 10 PM to 2 AM at the YMCA at 26th and Western.
  • Arcadia 2011 - On April 16th we will be having our 3rd Arcadia videogame tournament.  This will kickoff the spring season.  We will have 200+ youth out for a day of games, pizza, and outreach!
  • Gym Project - In two weeks we are going to be launching our fund-raising efforts for our new multi-purpose gym space.  The goal is to have a fully functional gym by September 1!  This will include basketball hoops, volleyball net, and more...possibly even a climbing wall!

There's a lot going on!  Thanks for your hard work and continued support.  Remember that God is moving and we must continue to pray for our youth and their families.  There were 4 shootings in the neighborhood last week alone...keep on going and keep on praying.

by Events 3. March 2011 19:14

Taking Your Soul to Work
Thursday, April 28, 6:30pm-9:00pm and Saturday, April 30, 8:30a.m.– 3:00pm
2-day workshop

Hosted at New Life Lakeview, 2958 N. Damen Avenue

Maybe you’ve felt like your work life doesn’t really matter to God—that God sees yourwork as some sort of “necessary evil”. Maybe you’ve failed to fully engage yourwork as a Christ-follower but you’d like to learn what that looks like.

Taking Your Soul to Work, led by Dr. R Paul Stevens and Dr. Gwen Dewey, will equip you with a new vision for the 40-60 hours you invest in your job each week. Rooted in biblical Christian teaching, they will help you grasp God’s view of your work life and how you can approach your marketplace career as a profound expression of your faith.

This is not a seminar on how to do evangelism in the workplace—it is learning experience that will help you see your work life—the job you have right now—as a calling from God.
