Urban Life Skills Updates!

by Matt DeMateo 23. March 2011 09:40

Things are going well for Urban Life Skills!  As the warm weather starts up, we begin our busy season!  Thanks for your continued support and prayers.  We couldn't do this work without you!  Here are some things that God has been doing among us.

  • Friday Night Group - We have changed our Friday night group layout and the youth are more engaged and the discussions are going deeper!
  • New Curriculum - We are in the process of compiling and putting into print our new curriculum.  As we teach it, we are laying out lesson plans so we can have others teach each lesson!
  • CPS - Culture of Calm grant is going strong as we continue to mentor 40 youth in Farragut high school!
  • Chicago Adventure Therapy - We have just planned out a variety of events for the spring/summer including a camping trip, rock climbing, biking, kayaking, and more!
  • Substance Abuse Training - Art and Epi are currently in California being trained on a new substance abuse curriculum (http://www.matrixinstitute.org/training/training.html) - going to take our group to the next level!
  • New Reentry Grant and New Staff! Today we began a new program through the governor's office working with juvenile offenders on parole.  We have hired Amy Williams as the program coordinator, Jay Estrada as our full time outreach worker, and Wes Kennedy as our Part Time outreach worker.
  • New Theater System - This weekend we are installing a state of the art theater system in the youth room with a 9 foot screen, HD projector, and surround sound.  We will use this for Friday groups, movie nights, and more!
  • Friday Night Football League - We will be beginning a Friday night flag football league in April.  There will be 8 teams and the league will be from 10 PM to 2 AM at the YMCA at 26th and Western.
  • Arcadia 2011 - On April 16th we will be having our 3rd Arcadia videogame tournament.  This will kickoff the spring season.  We will have 200+ youth out for a day of games, pizza, and outreach!
  • Gym Project - In two weeks we are going to be launching our fund-raising efforts for our new multi-purpose gym space.  The goal is to have a fully functional gym by September 1!  This will include basketball hoops, volleyball net, and more...possibly even a climbing wall!

There's a lot going on!  Thanks for your hard work and continued support.  Remember that God is moving and we must continue to pray for our youth and their families.  There were 4 shootings in the neighborhood last week alone...keep on going and keep on praying.

Chicago Harvest Crusade with Greg Laurie

by Events 16. August 2010 05:21

Chicago Harvest 2010 with Greg Laurie
Since 1990, Harvest Crusades has put on large-scale evangelistic outreaches around the United States and in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. More than 4,132,000 people have attended a Harvest Crusades event in person, and more than 341,400 people have registered decisions of faith in Jesus Christ.

Harvest Crusades events are designed to be opportunities for Christians to invite unsaved family members, coworkers, friends, and acquaintances to hear the life-changing message of the gospel in an environment that is entertaining, yet nonthreatening.

The cornerstone of each event is the presentation of the gospel by Pastor Greg Laurie. Biblically-sound and culturally relevant, Pastor Greg brings a clear gospel message, providing an opportunity for people to make a decision to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

For more information on the Crusade visit the official website (LINK) and also read through the FAQ page (LINK).

Teenagers in the house!

by Mike Berry 30. April 2010 09:31
We now have two teenagers in our family! Our 13 yr old daughter joins our 14 yr old daughter as our 2nd teen. Some people roll their eyes and make discouraging comments about the teen years but we know that God can work in young people! Both my wife and I came to Christ as teens and I’m glad to be working with our youth at New Life Midway. It’s time for our all-church Youth Retreat on May 14-16th. The theme is “Live on Purpose”. This should be a great time! Pastor Joshua and the team from Melrose/MontClare are leading the teaching while Pastor Matt from Little Village is leading the games. 7th graders thru High School—sign up on line under the “Current Events” section of this website. Adults can apply to be a Chaperone. Don’t miss it!!!

Tri-Taylor Baptisms

by Mark Jobe 16. December 2008 05:52

This past Sunday we celebrated our first baptisms at New Life Tri-Taylor since we opened two months ago.

Six ladies wearing blue t-shirts that read "I found a New Life" gave brief but powerful testimonies before a packed auditorium.  The church erupted in worship and celebration as Pastor Danny baptized these women in Jesus name. The tears and the joy on their faces were reminders of the life changing power of God. With limited time, but energized by the baptisms I had just witnessed I preached from Colossians chapter four. At the end of the message I felt prompted in my spirit to call out anyone else who needed to get baptized that day.  Four more people came forward for a spontaneous baptism. With no extra change of cloths, but courage and determination to obey two men and two more women stepped into the waters of baptism. What a powerful moment. It touched me to see Kevin Dweyer step up to the baptistery and help baptize his wife Terry who responded to the impromptu call that morning.

After witnessing 10 baptisms I left Tri-Taylor grateful to be a part of a community of faith that is seeing so many lives transformed in Jesus name.
