I was in the Humboldt Park nursery this Father's Day, but I didn't teach a lesson. And, no, despite what you may think, it's not just because we got caught up with PlayDough and Duck Duck Goose. I asked the questions, and the kids had such amazing answers--well, they were the lesson themselves.
First, I asked what daddies are like. Strangely enough, all the children this week had experienced daddies, and apparently the daddies of these homes are a great lot, because they:
- Are funny
- Like bacon
- Cook breakfast and supper--and let kids help
- Read stories
- Blow up balloons
- Make beds
- Kill bugs, and ants, and flies, and butterflies, and caterpillars
Then we talked about how God is our Daddy. Without any other explanation, I asked what God does that makes Him like a Daddy, and here's what they came up with, without any teleprompting whatsoever. God:
- Makes jokes
- Loves us
- Helps us
- When you're sleeping, God does all the work
- When you're scared, God protects you
- When you do something wrong, God does it right
Straight out of the Word, these kiddos' thoughts.
"God is love."
"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain."
"In vain you rise early and stay up late...for He grants sleep to those He loves."
"God is our refuge and strength."
"If we are faithless, He will remain faithful."
Praise the Lord, the Father of all, our true Daddy.
