Family Programs at Humboldt Park serves over 200 family members each
year with educational and career preparation services. 60 children and
tweens are registered for after-school and summer programs; 55
teenagers sign in for basketball; 10-20 youth participate in
apprenticeships and internships; annually, 40 youth and adults work on
resumes or online applications. 175 volunteers gain often their first
experience in an urban environment, mentoring our youth. Programs are a
mix of African-American and Latino students, bringing a beautiful
diversity.
Our community of west Humboldt Park registers a Community Disadvantage
Index of 9/10, presenting greater disadvantage to its residents than 90%
of communities in America. Though unemployment, undereducation,
violence, and incarceration abound, our youth and their families show
incredible determination and grace as they overcome their challenges.
