My prayer this fast has been simple: I want to see Jesus. To be completely immersed in my beautiful Savior, hearing His voice, waiting on His healings, believing for His miracles, and shining Him wherever I go.
Probably like you, the promise of living in Real, Amazing Jesus is what calls me to give up Doritos and Little Caesar's (I know, it's not even good pizza). But while we're pressing in through giving up things, God calls us to also press in through giving things, in His beautiful definition of true fasting:
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"
And the promises, New Life, are incredible. What happens when we do this--it's just what we are waiting for:
"Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
Then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame."
-Isaiah 58
New Life brothers and sisters, let's not just do a fast. Let's do a God-chosen fast, filling each hungry day with love and justice for our brothers, sisters, and neighbors. And when we do, let's not just do it in a grocery-store-checkout-"next please" kind of way. (I'm pretty sure Pharisees don't gain much God-blessing even from service.)
Let's look for Jesus, loving through us and receiving the love we give. Let's see His face in the eyes of those we serve. It's His Presence that holds what we wait for, and He promises special appearances as we serve Him:
"Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my Name, welcomes Me." -Mark 9:37
