Bird, Flying

by Elizabeth Galik 12. April 2011 09:04

One of the best parts of my work at the Centers is receiving the "bad" kids--I mean, kids who have made poor choices--and are sent on timeout from after-school programs at Humboldt Park.  I love those kids.  Last week, just a few moments into our afternoon, I was visited by a roomful of three middle schoolers, all refusing to write their Parts of Speech poems.  Asked to write a poem about their block that began with an adjective, all three middle schoolers responded with the enthusiasm of a speed bump.  Pencils never touched paper.

"Ok, it's your choice," I said, taking out the Discipline Policy papers.  "Write the poem and get a timeout for disrespect, or take a week off for refusing to follow directions."  This choice pushed seventh-grade Adonis* over the edge.  He was on his feet instantly.

"All these women here telling me what to do!" he shouted, eyes filling with tears.  "Ya'll can't just leave me alone!  I'm just trying to come in here and stay safe because my block is bloody and there's people being killed all over the place and I'm not writing about that!"

Other kids sent out.  Office door closed.  Adonis understood.  Peace restored.

Adonis wrote a new poem on the stipulation that it still not be read out loud.  His poem read, "Bird, flying."

"Is 'flying' an adjective or a verb?"

Oh, dear ones, we at Centers also do not want to write about Block, Bloody.  We want to write about Kids, Flying.  Families, Restored.  Communities, Beautiful.  The amazing fact that Adonis stands  in my office instead on the streets proves that they can do it; even now, in small ways, they are flying.

Join us.  We pray for no less than miracles, transformations, and restorations only God can bring about.  In the practical side of that, we also offer the opportunity to join us--to give.  On April 17th, New Life Community Church is collecting an offering for New Life Centers, and all funds collected that day will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 total.  On April 17th, join us in believing the blood can stop and our kids can fly.  Give online April 17th at nlcenters.org.

God's greatest blessings to you and yours.

*Name and photo changed to protect the one who didn't want his poem read aloud.

Urban Life Skills Updates!

by Matt DeMateo 23. March 2011 09:40

Things are going well for Urban Life Skills!  As the warm weather starts up, we begin our busy season!  Thanks for your continued support and prayers.  We couldn't do this work without you!  Here are some things that God has been doing among us.

  • Friday Night Group - We have changed our Friday night group layout and the youth are more engaged and the discussions are going deeper!
  • New Curriculum - We are in the process of compiling and putting into print our new curriculum.  As we teach it, we are laying out lesson plans so we can have others teach each lesson!
  • CPS - Culture of Calm grant is going strong as we continue to mentor 40 youth in Farragut high school!
  • Chicago Adventure Therapy - We have just planned out a variety of events for the spring/summer including a camping trip, rock climbing, biking, kayaking, and more!
  • Substance Abuse Training - Art and Epi are currently in California being trained on a new substance abuse curriculum (http://www.matrixinstitute.org/training/training.html) - going to take our group to the next level!
  • New Reentry Grant and New Staff! Today we began a new program through the governor's office working with juvenile offenders on parole.  We have hired Amy Williams as the program coordinator, Jay Estrada as our full time outreach worker, and Wes Kennedy as our Part Time outreach worker.
  • New Theater System - This weekend we are installing a state of the art theater system in the youth room with a 9 foot screen, HD projector, and surround sound.  We will use this for Friday groups, movie nights, and more!
  • Friday Night Football League - We will be beginning a Friday night flag football league in April.  There will be 8 teams and the league will be from 10 PM to 2 AM at the YMCA at 26th and Western.
  • Arcadia 2011 - On April 16th we will be having our 3rd Arcadia videogame tournament.  This will kickoff the spring season.  We will have 200+ youth out for a day of games, pizza, and outreach!
  • Gym Project - In two weeks we are going to be launching our fund-raising efforts for our new multi-purpose gym space.  The goal is to have a fully functional gym by September 1!  This will include basketball hoops, volleyball net, and more...possibly even a climbing wall!

There's a lot going on!  Thanks for your hard work and continued support.  Remember that God is moving and we must continue to pray for our youth and their families.  There were 4 shootings in the neighborhood last week alone...keep on going and keep on praying.

FINAL DAY OF THE FAST

by Mark Jobe 27. January 2011 04:06
Today is the last day of our twenty five day season of Prayer and Fasting.

It has been incredible to see hundreds and hundreds of people throughout New Life join in the journey of consecrating this time to God. As I review the past 25 days several thoughts come to mind....

▪   Chapel wall filled with prayer requests….. so many pressing needs.
▪   People weeping at the altar…so much brokenness.
▪   Growling stomachs…trying to turn appetite into hunger for God.
▪   Powerful testimonies at renewal meetings….. so much faith.
▪   All night prayer vigils….. people persevering before the throne.
▪   Early morning prayer times…. this day belongs to you Lord.
▪   Tired body craving food…. renewed spirit craving God
▪   Crying out for more of him….. moments of fresh encounters
▪   Sick of juices and broth…. the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak

Fasting is never easy, but the spiritual fruit is never wasted. There are breakthroughs that have been set in motion during this fast that we will not
see with our natural eyes for months or sometimes even years, but have already begun.
There are hearts that have been renewed, chains that have been loosened, prodigals that have been called back, marriages that have been reclaimed, dreams that have been revived, flesh that has been put back in its place, faith that has been refreshed, words that have been released, territory that has been claimed and divine destinies that have been set in motion.

May fasting and prayer be more than just a season, may it be woven into the fabric of our living. May Praying, Giving and Fasting (Matthew 6) become part of the rhythm of our life.

Blessings,

Pastor Mark

Fasting

by John Palmieri 22. January 2011 04:26
Family of God - I trust that your season of fasting is going well. I've been praying for you and asking that God be glorified in and through your life during this special time in our church. Although fasting is difficult I enjoy the intentional empty spaces that it creates. The empty space cries out to be filled...and reminds me that I am a man of prayer (we are a people of prayer) and therefore I turn to the bread of heaven to fill me;

John 6:35 "Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

When that empty space is filled with the bread of life and living water - I am satisfied - I need nothing else - all idols are cast down.

Lastly - remember the kind of fast that pleases God is one that seeks peace and gives to the poor.

Isaiah 58:6-7;
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
   and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

In His Peace, Grace and Joy,

Pastor John

During Times of Fasting

by Tony Nunez 21. January 2011 07:54

During times of fasting, we aim to take time off from our daily routine and begin to really think of all the things that we will do different during this time; we look to stay away from television, secular radio, internet, and other forms of entertainment, we even watch how we talk, what we listen to, making sure nothing ruins what we have going.  It’s a time of purging our minds of all the garbage we’ve been putting in our lives for an entire year. Soon we begin to notice that we begin to feel different, think different, we turn into a totally different person; a godly person I would say. As we look to finishing strong, let us remember that God has created the fast to remind us that the way we live our lives during the fast is the correct way to live every day.  We shouldn’t think that just because the fast is over we can now return to watching immorality and perversion on our television, or go back to allowing lies to creep back into our lives now that we have given God his 25 days. When we abstain from the corruption of this world we are able to hear God’s voice clearly. Paul gave us an example of how athletes abstain from things in order to obtain a crown that perishes.

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

In the same way let us abstain, lets us run, let us make our bodies our salves so that the flesh will be weakened and our spirit will grow stronger. Not just during this time but every day. Remember God created the times of fasting only to remind us of how we should life a life in the spirit.
